INSTALLATION GUIDE
Installation Prerequisites

Child safe solutions is compatible with Microsoft Windows Only (Windows XP and newer) and is compatible with most popular internet browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Safari. Please note that unlike the other browsers we are unable to display a message as to why the web page has been blocked when using Safari. This is due to limitations within the Safari browser but does not stop websites from being blocked (all other browsers quoted are not affected by this).

Before you begin to install Child Safe you must first of all ensure that you have administrator privileges on the user account being used to install the software. If you are not in an account with administrator privileges then you will be unable to install the child safe software.

If the software has been downloaded you will require an archive program such as WinZip or WinRAR to extract the installation file prior to installation.

USER ACCOUNTS

Now you have installed the Child Safe software you must now configure the software for use.

USER ACCOUNTS

User Accounts

When you first launch the Child Safe software you will be presented with the “Home” screen (see Fig 15 below).

(Fig 15)

Child safe has scanned your computer and has found all the existing user accounts that are present on the computer and has displayed them on this screen.

You have two options when configuring user accounts for use.

1.    Edit an existing windows user and apply restrictions to the user account.
2.    Create a new windows user and apply restrictions to the user account.  Please note that new windows user accounts can be created using the Child Safe software rather than using the windows control panel user account application.

The processes in this section of the quick start guide detail how to apply restrictions to both new and existing windows user accounts, and how to restrict accounts to the standards set in BSI PAS 74:2008.

EXISTING WINDOWS USER ACCOUNTS

Existing Windows User Accounts

To apply restrictions to an existing windows user account the existing users must have been opened at least once before restrictions can be set.  This is because windows must first of all activate the windows user profile.

If they have not been accessed a message would appear in red beside the user in the user account list saying “No Login since CSS was launched” (see Fig 15 below for an example).

If the user accounts listed on your computer have a red colour message beside it you must first of all log off your current user account and log in to that user.  Once logged in as the user you must then wait for windows to complete the login process.  When windows has finished logging in you must then log out of that user and log back in to the administrator account.

When you then access the Child Safe software again the massage that appears in the user account list beside the user will then be green in colour and will display the date and time of the last login.

(Fig 15)

If the accounts have already been previously been opened then the message that appears beside the user account will confirm when the last login occurred (see Fig 16 below).

(Fig 16)

CREATING A NEW WINDOWS USER ACCOUNT

Creating a New Windows User Account

Child Safe provides you with the functionality to create new windows users by using the “New Windows User” button on the “Home” screen (see Fig 15 below).

(Fig 15)

When you click on the “New Windows User” button you will be presented with the “Create New User Account” screen (see Fig 17 below).
•    In the “User Name” field type the name you would like to use for the new user (see Fig 18 below).
•    If you would like to apply a password for the user you can do so at this point by typing a password in the “Password” and repeat the password in the “Confirm Password” field (also shown in Fig 18 below).

(Fig 17) (Fig 18)

When the user account has been successfully created you will be prompted to restart the computer for the change(s) to take effect (see Fig 19 below).

(Fig 19)

IMPORTANT

At this stage it is important that you log in to the new user account so that windows can finalise the setup of the account.  Once you have completed this you must then log into the administrator account and launch Child Safe again in order to check that the correct restrictions are applied.  If you fail to do this you may find that the restricted user may have access to content that you do not want them to.

When you ate happy that the correct restrictions are applied you can test the restrictions are active by logging in to the restricted user account and try and access sites that fall in to the categories that you have classified as restricted such as adult material, gambling and social network sites.

CONFIGURE A NEW WINDOWS ACCOUNT

Configuring a User Account

To configure an existing windows user account you must first of all click on the user name in the user account list which will turn dark blue when highlighted (see Fig 16 below).

(Fig 16)

When the account has been highlighted two new buttons will appear on the screen called “Manage User” and “Delete User”.

In order to apply restrictions to the selected user you must click the “Manage User” button, which will then display the “Manage Restrictions” screen (see Fig 20 below).

(Fig 20)

MANAGE RESTRICTIONS SCREEN

The Manage Restrictions screen is used to associate a user template for the restricted users, allow or restrict access to the computer, internet, programs, websites and system tools.  Each of these categories has an individual tab located at the top of the Manage Restrictions screen.  The following table advises what each of the tabs contains (see Tbl 1 below).

(Fig 36)

WEB FILTERING

Web Filtering

The primary functionality of Child Safe is to protect children and vulnerable adults from the dangers of the internet.  It achieves this by categorising websites based on their content; these categories can then be restricted or unrestricted where required.

To apply restrictions to a website category the checkbox next to the category must display a green tick.  Categories without a green tick in the checkbox means that the category is not restricted.  The image below (Fig 36) shows that all categories apart from Sex Education and Web Based Email are restricted.

(Fig 36)

The Filtering Options checkbox (shown above in Fig 36) turns the strict filtering functionality on or off.  When turned on this function ensures that websites in the restricted category are not displayed in the results of the search engine.

When you have selected the required categories click on the “Submit” button.  When you have successfully changed the program access settings for a user account the following message will appear (see Fig 33 below).  When this screen appears click on the “OK” button to close it.

(Fig 33)

The image below (see Fig 37) is an example of what a restricted user will be presented with if they try an access a website that is in a restricted category.  In the example a user has tried to access a gambling site (www.888.com).

(Fig 37)

Child Safe Solutions is compatible with most major browsers including Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox & Safari. However when blocking websites in Safari the blocked page will appear blank and will not show the information shown in Fig 37 above.
